I got a FreeNAS Mini a few years ago when I was first discovering the BSDs, and I've been very happy with it. But recently FreeNAS has started to feel more restrictive than helpful; sometimes the web interface gets in the way of something I know how to do. In particular, upgrading the ownCloud plugin jail never works properly and I have to ssh in and play with warden before I can find any kind of error message. At that point, it would be easier for me to just use FreeBSD. So I'd like to convert the FreeNAS Mini from FreeNAS to FreeBSD in my FreeTime on a FreeWeekend. I think I should be able to simply replace the freenas-boot pool with a FreeBSD install and import the data pool. I'll have to set up all the shares, services, and jails, but at least all the data will be there. Is there an easy way to get the OS (11.0-RELEASE) installed on the data pool rather than being on a separate drive? Keeping them separate feels like having a single point of failure in my RAID array. Is there anything I should be aware of before I do this?
