Tobias - Satisfying my storage hunger and wallet pains

Hello Benedict and Allan!

Firstly I would like to thank you for the always interesting and educational show.
You're a stable in my work and home commute and I appreciate the technical nature of the show very much.

The main reason I'm writing to you, is to ask for some guidance in expanding my storage in a scalable manner.

I currently have a FreeNAS machine running with 4TB of usable storage.
This has worked fine for a while, but my backup needs have exceeded what the machine can provide.

I have looked at a NetApp DS2246 disk shelf, but would like something a little less noisy and powerhungry.

My idea is to setup a BSD machine, with some 10TB HDDs, to function like a disk shelf and present the storage to the current FreeNAS machine, like a disk shelf would.

I don't mind getting my hands dirty and fiddle around with configuration for a couple of weekends,
but thought it would be best to ask someone who actually knows what they are doing, instead of just hacking a solution together.

Would it be possible to setup a FreeBSD machine to do this or is there a better method you would recommend?

Best regards,
Tobias
